I have been employed abroad. How can I claim a pension?

If you have been insured abroad, you may claim your rights on the basis of the EU legislation on the coordination of social security systems or of international agreements concluded by Slovenia with several countries. The main features of these regulations are:

  • as a rule, a beneficiary receives a pension in each of the countries in which they were insured. They acquire a pension entitlement in a country when they meet the conditions under the regulations of that country;
  • the insurance periods completed in other Member States or contracting parties are also taken into account towards meeting eligibility conditions;
  • pensions may be paid to beneficiaries in Member States or other contracting parties in which the beneficiary resides;
  • a claim for a pension is filed in only one country. As a rule, this is the country of residence or the country of most recent employment. The countries in which the person was insured, must be stated in the claim. The competent insurance provider then forwards the claim to the providers in those countries.

These rules are applied in the Member States, in Switzerland, Iceland, Norway and Liechtenstein.
