International cooperation

The Institute is the competent authority for the implementation of international insurance entitlements. Within the framework of its activities it corresponds with other institutions and exchanges details in individual cases, decides on entitlements of the insured persons who have been insured in Slovenia and abroad and pays benefits abroad. As a liaison body the Institute exchanges information on legislation as well as statistical data with competent insurance institutions of other countries implementing the same type of insurance and takes an active role in promoting international collaboration.

Within the European Union, international insurance is governed by the EU regulations on the coordination of social security systems (Regulation (EC) No 883/2004 and Regulation (EC) No 987/2009). These regulations apply to EU Member States as well as Liechtenstein, Iceland, Norway, and Switzerland.

The Republic of Slovenia has concluded bilateral social security agreements with some countries which are not EU Member States:

  • Argentina,
  • Australia,
  • Bosnia and Herzegovina,
  • Montenegro,
  • Canada and separately with Quebec,
  • Macedonia,
  • Serbia.
